Completing my ILM Level 7 in Coaching & Mentoring with hashtag#loveyoucoaching was a transformative experience. One of the most profound lessons I learned from hashtag#charliewarshawski was to coach the person, not just the topic. This simple but powerful shift has completely reshaped my coaching practice, allowing me to connect more deeply with my clients.

A pivotal part of this journey was reading Helping People Change by Richard Boyatzis, Melvin Smith, and Ellen Van Oosten—a true “sunshine book.” The concepts of compassion, lifelong learning, and personal growth are interwoven throughout, creating a roadmap for coaching that is as nurturing as it is impactful.
At the heart of the book lies the idea of fostering growth through the balance of two emotional states:
PEA (Positive Emotional Attractor): Energizing and inspiring, it taps into hope, optimism, and dreams for the future.
NEA (Negative Emotional Attractor): Acknowledging challenges and discomfort, it can lead to necessary reflection and growth.
The delicate relationship between these two attractors is key for personal development, and they serve as invisible strings in the coaching process—guiding, supporting, and empowering leaders to grow with compassion and self-awareness.
These invisible strings, as I apply them in my coaching, offer:
Compassion: A space for vulnerability and trust, where leaders feel supported.
Room for Self-Discovery: Encouraging exploration beyond the surface to understand deeper motivations and aspirations.
Emotional, Positive, and Creative Growth: Helping leaders tap into their potential through both reflective and forward-focused emotional states.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in coaching with compassion and making a true impact on others. It’s not just about helping people achieve their goals—it’s about empowering them to transform.
