Diversity and inclusion are issues that resonate deeply with me, particularly in light of recent events that have brought them to the forefront of my consciousness. My recent engagement with Salma Shah’s book, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging in Coaching, has further crystallized the importance of these themes in the realm of coaching.
At the outset, I must emphasise that Shah’s book is an essential read for any coach striving to comprehend the profound impact that diversity, inclusion, and belonging have on their clients. Shah’s assertion that “now, more than ever, understanding how to coach through a wider, systemic lens of inclusion, belonging, and diversity is going to be one of the critical tools for supporting and making a positive impact” (Shah, 2021) encapsulates the core message of her work. The book is rich with case studies, practical examples, and probing questions at the end of each chapter, all designed to push us, as coaches, to challenge our assumptions and delve deeper into our practices.
Despite the book’s invaluable insights, it has also prompted me to reflect on my own capabilities and the impact I can truly have. As a British Asian woman who immigrated to the UK from Uganda in 1972, I am acutely aware that my identity does not automatically grant me an intrinsic understanding of all aspects of diversity. My experiences as a leader in a large, multi-ethnic school in London have certainly informed my approach to coaching, particularly in considering factors like background, family, and culture. However, these insights stem from my professional journey and lived experiences, rather than solely from my ethnicity.
It is imperative for us as coaches to consider the multifaceted nature of our clients’ identities. We must harness our emotional intelligence to ask probing, challenging questions and to listen actively to the responses, in order to uncover any deep-rooted issues our clients may be grappling with. While it is impossible to possess a complete understanding of every issue or experience our clients bring to us, Shah demonstrates that by asking the right questions and thoughtfully considering what belonging, inclusion, and identity mean to each individual, we can indeed make a positive and lasting impact.
